The Specific Purpose Work Visa is for people coming to New Zealand to complete a specific, time-bound purpose or event. Accepted purposes include senior or specialist secondments (up to 12 months), intra-company transfers of senior managers or specialists (up to 3 years), installing or servicing specialised machinery (up to 3 months), professional sports players and coaches, referees and judges, and dance and music examiners.
You'll need evidence of how long you need to be in New Zealand, a job offer, invitation or schedule where required, and relevant qualifications or experience. The work must not be open-ended or permanent. Seasonal work closed under this visa on 7 December 2025, and entertainers should use the Entertainers Work Visa instead.
Immigration New Zealand sets its application fees, levies and processing times and updates them regularly, so we don't quote them here. Check the current cost and decision time for your situation with INZ's Fees, decision times and where to apply tool, and see the full requirements on INZ's Specific Purpose Work Visa page.
Because each purpose has its own evidence rules and time limits, getting the category right is essential. Concord helps businesses and individuals match the work to the right purpose and build a clear, complete application. New Zealand matters are handled by Sejoo Han, Licensed Immigration Adviser (IAA licence 202400274).
Who is it for?
This visa suits multinational businesses moving senior staff or specialists to New Zealand, overseas suppliers sending technicians to install equipment, and sports professionals and officials with a New Zealand engagement.
It's best when the work has a clear end date. If you're planning a longer-term move with a New Zealand employer, an Accredited Employer Work Visa or a residence pathway may be a better fit.
